ELUV

It is the combination of work done by three deeply committed people, beginning with Dr. Andy

Schoenberg (now professor emeritus University of Utah), and continuing with David “Dr. Dave

“Jones. The project has been champion with consistent effort by Chris Harris. All three are

deeply committed, environmentalist and sympathetic nature, loving advocates of clean

affordable transportation.

Beginning in the year 2000, then research professor Dr. Schoenberg ventured to build a human powered vehicle, HPV. His work continued with an annual iterations, producing new designs annually, improving consistently year by year. Beginning in 2010, he produced a road legal three wheeled motorcycle, complete with vehicle, identification number and a manufacturers listing in Utah. The Sunzeecar Eco-trike was born, and would live on for a decade. He produced a new vehicle every year, complete with license plate and then until 2020. At this point, the activities Shifted.

Beginning in 2020...

David Jones (magna cum laude , electrical engineering “82) worked side-by-side with Chris Harris to develop an circuit to connect batteries, charge controllers, and

hub motors to electrify the five legal requirements for a motor vehicle: headlights, directional, brake lights, throttle and... The horn of course. Having completed a plug-in play version that is easily accessible and easily reproducible, this new circuit is fondly called the “low five.”Early in 2024, ENSO education became affiliated with the love team and they commenced

planning on the “ELUV challenge.”

Community Focus

Originally inspired by a vision of a global community working

together on variations of road legal vehicles, the ELUV challenge is a crowdsourcing initiative intended to empower the next generation of engineers, mechanics, designers, and

entrepreneurs in the affordable transportation space as well as the environmental improvement arena. The low five can be shipped, conveniently without the heavy burden of manufacturers

insurance, automobile, crash, testing, or the automobile itself. It is mainly a circuit board with wiring connections, but other parts (Kelly hub motors, Kelly charge controllers, batteries, and

solar panels ) can all be purchased through simple means, and drop- shipping opportunities and education and ELUV are all affiliated with the blue communities consortium, an NGO

consulting firm Student by a small group of committed individuals, supporting and promoting solutions to coastal environment and economies that rely upon a healthy ocean. But these

solutions may be applied the world over, providing affordable transportation, and zero emissions solutions to pressing oil dependency. The whale, we hope to build capacities for low tech,

product development, and “communities of practice “as we create a global level of competency through technician certification and collaborative efforts, regardless of International barriers,

location, language or educational opportunities.

David Jones

David Jones is a brilliant electrical engineer, graduating Magna Cum Laude from the University of Utah in 1982 He has work on several ground breaking project ranging from digital music, the portable x-ray, the artificial heart and other high profile projects. He brings a superior efficiency and thorough knowledge to this project, identifying areas of concern well ahead of the results of application with future prototypes. He is an avid hiker, long distance runner, a nature enthusiast and a defender of human dignity in our relationship with the natural world. This work has been pure passion for him and he hopes to have a global impact with this new technology.

Dr. Andy Schoenberg

Dr. Andy Schoenberg is a lover of nature, an accomplished amateur tennis player, and an engineer of broad experiences. He has a bachelor degree in Engineering Science and a master’s degree in Instrumentation Engineering from Case Institute of Technology. He worked as an Aerospace Engineer at NASA on a nuclear power system for the Moon. His interest in medicine and how the human brain worked led him to come to the University of Utah and work on the artificial heart research. He received a NIH Fellowship to get a PhD in Bioengineering at the U of U in 1973. Since then he worked in a broad range of research such as developing standards for medical devices for the FDA, tactile sensors to restore “feeling” in paralyzed limbs, and various devices to help people with disabilities to allow work and play. After serving a varied career as a research professor at the University of Utah working at the rehabilitation department of the University’s Medical School, he retired in 2000. Since then he endeavored to develop a model for zero emissions transportation. He began this project over 20 years ago and has poured himself into the project, consistently arguing for more attention to the human impact on our local ecosystem. His work led to a prototype, practical, street-legal three-wheeled electric motorcycle that has an energy consumption of better than the equivalent of 400 mpge. It uses a solar panel on its roof that provides true zero-emissions energy to the batteries of the vehicle. Although his work is now completed and he is less involved in the commercialization and distribution of this new technology, his interest in low impact transportation continues and hopes that the younger people will develop a commercial version that will energize our global community.

Chris Harris

Chris Harris is deeply committed to a life of service to higher purpose, focused on environmental and social justice. He has trained for several years as a breathwork instructor through the Vibravision program and the Merpati Putih martial arts school, focused on unleashing extra sensory awareness among his students. He is also a self trained herbal medicine wild-crafter and runs a small shilajit company, Stone Blood Shilajit, harvesting and preparing his own mineral supplement products for general health and wellness. He has worked as a volunteer ski patroller for many years and is an avid telemark skier (no poles!) as well as a bare-booted hiker and outdoorsman.

His work with Sunzeecar was a labor of passion, voluntarily contributing considerable time and effort to this project, and the team doing the technical work. Chris is a member of the Blue Communities consortium, an NGO consulting firm deeply involved in the work to improve coastal economies and prepare them for a changing world to endure global climate change and preserve ocean health as they rely on their tourism business and fisheries.
